The transition hose, and what it hides

Most of the damage happens when the dryer goes back. The hose folds flat against the baseboard. Laundry closets crush it into the bifold track. Stacked units in a hallway closet are worst. Second-floor laundries above a garage add a long cold run. Slow air drops lint. The fold packs solid.

Identify what you already have. Hold a magnet to the pipe. Galvanized steel grabs it. Aluminum ignores it. Listed transition duct carries a printed listing mark on the jacket. White vinyl and thin slinky foil carry none. Both crease once and stay creased.

Three checks anyone can run. Watch the outside shutters while the drum turns. They should stand open, then snap shut when it stops. Painted-over shutters never move again. Pull the lint screen and reach below the housing. Lint sitting under the filter means the blower is loaded, not the hose. Then touch the collar behind the dryer mid-cycle. Damp warmth there is escaping air.

Sheet metal screws in the airstream catch lint and build a dam. Use foil tape and a band clamp instead. Cloth duct tape hardens and releases.

Sometimes the hose is not the job. Crushed pipe inside a joist bay. A hood buried behind mulch. A roof cap holding a nest. Replacing hose there accomplishes nothing.
